Product Description The IOGEAR Bluetooth 2.0 USB Micro Adapter offers Bluetooth connectivity at a fraction of the size of normal Bluetooth USB adapters. About the size of an adult fingernail, the IOGEAR Bluetooth 2.0 USB Micro Adapter allows users to connect to all the latest Bluetooth devices like cell phones, PDAs, mice and keyboards. Because the Micro Adapter is so small you can easily plug it into your computer without blocking any surrounding USB ports. The Micro Adapter also features Bluetooth EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) technology for transfer rates that are 3 times faster than traditional Bluetooth 1.1 and 1.2 adapters. The Micro Adapter also allows users to connect up to seven Bluetooth devices together and transfer even the largest files quickly and easily. With the Micro Adapter's lower power consumption, you can enjoy longer battery life on your notebook computer. This Bluetooth Class 2 adapter is also compatible with both Mac and PC computers, and offers a wireless range of 30 feet (10 meter). It is great for both home and mobile networking needs. Step 4 : Reboot
Step 5 : Look for devices via your newly added taskbar bluetooth icon
Step 6 : Pair desired bluetooth device
EASY.
Works great on Win7 September 2, 2010 craftgrrrrl Since I had zero prior experience with bluetooth, I was a little nervous after reading some of the reviews about whether I was going to be able to install this successfully. I got the adapter in order to be to easily transfer pictures from my cellphone to my computer. After some trial and error, I was able to get it properly installed and have already successfully transferred the pictures, so all is well. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. For those neophytes like me, here's what I did: I first just plugged the adapter in and saw it started searching for drivers on its own so I let it do its thing. Then with my cellphone I tried to add a device and I was able to successfully get the phone to recognize the computer and vice versa, but when I went to transfer pictures it just kept saying there was no device connected. After running the troubleshooter on my computer, it said my phone was connected but had no services. So, even though some reviewers said they didn't need the manufacturer's drivers, in my case I needed them.
Following others' advice, I did not use the enclosed disk but went directly to the Iogear website ([..]), clicked on support, drivers, searched on "bluetooth", then selected model GBU421 and downloaded the Vista & Win7 driver (same one). After the files download & extract, I double-clicked on the Setup_Vista_Win7 file which starts the installation process. (Make sure the adapter is NOT plugged in when you start installation.) Click yes to install and it will do its thing for a few minutes until it reaches a point where it says it cannot detect a bluetooth device and only gives you the option to cancel. At that point, I plugged the adapter in, and it automatically continued installing. After it finished installing, I went back to the Windown bluetooth setup and saw it was searching on some sort of drivers and I noticed it had a long list of services that weren't there before. So I just let it finish doing its thing (took several minutes so be patient) and once it was done, I was able to transfer the pictures no problem.
This may not be the best way to do it, but it worked for me. I also agree with other reviewers that it's a little difficult to take in and out, but it's so tiny that I'm just going to leave it in all the time. One other note - another reviewer mentioned it's a battery drain, but in Win7 you can easily turn Bluetooth on and off, so I intend to leave it off most of the time and just turn it on when I need it. I would think it would only draw power if it's on.
Works well ... with computers August 31, 2010 T. Theuerkorn (Hickory, NC United States) I purchased this to use with my Canon wireless file transfer unit WFT-E4 IIa (for the EOS 5D MkII). Even though Canon doesn't specify Bluetooth requirements, it turns out that the WFT is officially only compatible with Canon's own Bluetooth stick BU-30. (unfortunately not in micro format, and not cheap either) The GBU appears to be incompatible to the WFT when trying to connect to it. I've been unable to make it work there, but it's flawless in my laptop (Win 7).
Works well with Windows 7 x64 & Plantronics Voyager 920 August 30, 2010 KolosoK **Make sure to install the newest drivers from the IOGear website first!** If you follow this instruction it will simply work. I was connected to my Plantronics Voyager 920 bluetooth headset in no time. Calls over Skype were clear, with no breaks in the audio. This is a good product at an affordable price.
Win 7 user and it works great! August 30, 2010 J. Haggard (Nashville, TN) I am using a Win7 laptop and I will say this thing works great! I know there are some reviews out there for this product saying it doesn't work but the problem is Win7 removed Bluetooth from the OS for some reason. If you search for the bluetooth stack installer you can download it and then put bluetooth back in Win7. It's an easy process, not sure why Microsoft removed bluetooth from Win7 but that's not the point of this review, point is once you install the bluetooth stack it works great!
Now for this dongle, it is very small and I love it hardly sticks out the side of my laptops USB port. I bought this because I use a laptop at work and we have to lock our computers everytime we step away from them, I have a tendnacy to forget to do this and I found a free program called "Phoenix Freeze" (google it) and it allows you to pair your bluetooth phone to your computer, then when you are within range your computer is unlocked, as soon as you step out of range it auto locks itself. It's a great program and this little dongle works perfectly with it!
The only "con" that I can think of is that it really is very small and is sometimes hard to grip if you need to remove it. It doesn't come out, you just have to firmly be able to grab it. But then again I never take it out so it's not that big of a deal for me.
I am very happy with this little device. It does exactly what I need.
